Naalbinding: Mittens done in the Broden stitch

by Isabel Ulfsdottir

These are two sets of mittens I did in the Broden stitch. I made the mittens to keep warm at the Tourney of Ymir. The mittens were done in a wool/mohair blend. I originally planned for the red mittens to fit Danr, my lord. However, when I started the mittens, I followed the instructions for a medium sized pair of mittens forgetting that your thumb is the gage for Naalbinding. Since my thumb is much smaller than most people’s thumbs the medium mittens turned out very small, but just the right size to fit me. So… I then made a second pair in green for my lord. I made this pair much larger to fit him. When I made the mittens, I reinforced the area where the thumb attaches to the rest of the mitten. This got rid of the small gap that sometimes happens at sharp corners in Naalbinding. I plan to decorate the mittens with embroidery in the future.

Please see my documentation on the Naalbinding socks for instructions and historical documentation on Naalbinding in general.
